What's it all about?

The Challenge Business is a company set up by Chay Blyth, realising the desire that ordinary people have to challenge themselves in extra-ordinary ways. He was the first to row across the Atlantic in 1966, and in 1970 was the first person to sail single handed non-stop around the world travelling against the prevailing winds and currents.

In 1989 he advertised for crew volunteers for the first Global Challenge, sponsored by British Steel. These volunteers needed no previous sailing experience, but would sail around the world aboard 67 foot racing yachts the wrong way; against prevailing winds and currents. The event was supposed to be a one off challenge, but such was the interest that a second similar event was run in 1996, this time sponsored by British Telecom.

The next event in the series was again sponsored by BT, and set sail from Southampton at the beginning of September 2000, returning via Boston, Buenos Aires, Wellington, Sydney, Cape Town and La Rochelle in June 2001. As well as running other events, the Challenge Business are running a Round Britain Challenge in April 2003 and the next Global Challenge in 2004-2005.

It is these two events that I've applied for, and been given a crew volunteer berths, conditional on raising the money and passing the various challenges that the training will throw at me. It's an amazing prospect for me; I hope you'll stay tuned to see how things progress!
